Best Travel Apps For Your iPhone And Android Phone

As dedicated travel junkies, we’re always on the hunt for the smartest new technology that takes the grind out of our nomadic lifestyles. Here are Team GILBANO’s most preferred travel apps. Before you go on your next trip make sure check these out!

Photo Sharing Apps

What are your vacations' best pictures worth without sharing them with your best friends? The following apps should help!

Instagram - The most popular photo sharing service. Share your favorite vacation pictures straight to your profile or use their new stories features - [link]

Facebook - Almost 2 billion people use this app already, chances are most of your friends are using it as well. Why not share your holiday photos here? If you don't want the entire world to see your pictures, you can limit who sees your photos in the photo sharing section [link]

Snapchat - Born as an alternative to Facebook and beloved by many millennials. From its humble origin as a fun way to send self-erasing photo messages, Snapchat has grown into one of our favorite social media apps. And not just for the hilarious face filters and cool geographical photo tags. It’s become one of the best ways to share memories, maintain friendships, and stay up to date on news and views from our go-to websites. [link]

Google Photos - Google is the most popular email service provider. Apart from email, their free account also allows you to store large amounts of photos. If you use the cloud to store your high-res vacation images you will be able to sleep well knowing all images are safe and your local hard-drive won't ever be fully used. [link]

Dating Apps

Meeting like-minded travelers from diverse backgrounds is one of the most exciting parts traveling has to offer. While most apps are called "Dating" apps most of them also have features so you can meet your next BFF. Download some of these apps to meet amazing human beings from different walks of life.

Bumble - Do you want to meet new people on the road? Try the more sophisticated version of Tinder. [link]

Happn - Happn is a dating app with more than 50 million users which allows you to easily find the people you've crossed paths with in real life (yes, those who caught your eye, but you didn't dare to approach)! With happn, you have the opportunity to create your own luck! [link]

Coffee meets Bagel - Another dating app helping you to meet interesting people. Whether you are the bagel in need for coffee or vice-versa, this app will help you. [link].

Tantan - The Chinese copy of Tinder. However, if you travel to Asia this is the app to have on your phone! [link]

Taxi Apps

Most people only know the UBER app. However, depending on which part of the world you visit, UBER might not exist. Check out the following Taxi apps prior to going on your journey!

Taxify - Taxify is a ride-hailing app for ordering rides that are quick, safe and affordable. Just tap a button, order a car, and get a low-cost ride to your destination. [link

Uber - Uber is a ridesharing app for fast, reliable rides in minutes—day or night. There's no need to park or wait for a taxi or bus. With Uber, you just tap to request a ride, and it's easy to pay with credit or cash in select cities. [link]

Grab - This is Uber's biggest competitor in Asia and since Uber left Asia, this is the only app you will need in most South-East-Asian countries. Download the app here.

Grab taxi

MyTaxi - Ride in style with the mytaxi app – Europe’s biggest licensed taxi and black cab app. Look no further for a reliable and professional taxi app you can trust. With a number of features to make your trip a breeze, mytaxi gets you on your way in a matter of minutes. [link]

Bike Sharing Apps

Team GILBANO loves bike sharing concepts. It takes traffic off the roads and it helps visitors explore cities. The following apps are amongst our favorites:

OFO - One of the leading bike sharing rental companies in the world offering you to rent bikes without having to return them to a specific location. We love it! Check out their app here

Santander Bikes - These bikes used to be called "Boris Bikes" before the bank behemoth took over. If you're going to London, this app should be on your phone. You can download the app here. Hotel Apps

Any trip to a new city also involves looking and searching for accommodation. We usually recommend asking your circle of friends for tips. However, if they don't have any, one of the following apps will certainly get the job done, trust us.

Agoda - This app helps you find great deals for hotels. If you sign up and become a member you can collect points and qualify for additional discounts. Their customer support is not always the greatest but overall we recommend their services. As with all websites, be aware of fake reviews. Cross-check any hotel score with the score the same hotel receives on google. You can download the app here.

Booking - Very similar to Agoda, Booking helps you search for hotels, motels & vacation homes. Find a stay for your vacation, weekend getaway, or business trip anywhere in the world! [link]

Booking app

AirBnB - Our favorite app when it comes to booking accommodation in different countries. Not always cheaper than hotels but ALWAYS worth checking out before booking anything. From our experience reviews are much more accurate and reliable than the ones you read on Booking and Agoda. Book your next stay on their website and/or download their app here.

Hotel Tonight - Amazing hotel deals for tonight, tomorrow and beyond! Hotels give discounts on their empty rooms. You get the best rates and deals, whether last minute or in advance. HotelTonight makes it incredibly easy to find and reserve a sweet deal at a great hotel. Three taps, one swipe, you’re booked! Download the app here

Hotel Tonight

Hostel World - Recently featured in Huffington Post’s round up of Best Travel Apps. With over 10 million reviews from our community of passionate travellers, an unbeatable selection and a 100% booking guarantee, why would you book anywhere else? Choose from shared dorms and private rooms in central locations, meet like-minded travellers and discover a world beyond the tourist brochure. [link]

Hostel World

Couch Surfing - You have friends around the world, you just haven’t met them yet. Couchsurfing is the best way to stay with amazing locals, make lifelong travel friends, or host travelers coming to your hometown. Over 12 million travel enthusiasts use Couchsurfing in more than 230,000 cities around the world. [link]

Other hotel apps we can recommend include Expedia, Trivago, Secret Escapes and Kuoni.

Music Apps

As you probably know, music can express what language cannot. Any memorable adventure involves a good soundtrack so if there was only one app you could download, choose a music app!

Soundcloud - Our favorite amongst all music apps! You will find many independent artists and great mixes from DJ's. Our secret travel hack: When travelling to a country in which SoundCloud doesn't have any advertising partners you can listen to all music non-stop, add-free. Brilliant!  [link]

Spotify - The biggest of all music streaming apps. If you want to listen to any top song, chances are very high you will find the song on Spotify. If you have a few dollars extra, get their monthly subscription so you can say goodbye to their annoying ads. Download the app here

Apple Music - When Apple saw that Spotify was a brilliant business model, they decided to launch their own service. If you are an iPhone user, this app might be superior to Spotify, however, we hear mixed feedback so test yourself! [link]

Apple Music

Youtube - Why not listen to music and watch the music video at the same time? That's why you should have the Youtube app on your phone. Download it here

Food Exploring Apps

Apart from great pictures, most people bring home great culinary experiences from their adventures to far-away destinations. The following apps will guide your way to find the local hotspots that will make your tastebuds scream with joy.

FourSquare - The best days for Foursquare might be over. However, if you visit a new city, this app might still be able to suggest a few good places to find exquisite food options. [link]

HappyCow - Being vegan is totally en vogue, in particular if you live in LA, NYC, SF or Berlin. In fact, eating less meat is a great for planet Earth so we couldn't encourage you enough to use this app and to eat "meat-less". [link]

Happy Cow

Yelp - Arguable the most famous of all food recommendation apps. It's gotten some bad press lately for fake reviews, but by and large their app works flawlessly and you should be in safe hands when searching for some local cuisine tips. [link]
